"DJ Sweet T" Is Here To Make Things Shake...

Standish913.com has been blessed to do an interview with...

"DJ SWEET T"!

DJ Sweet T got started by pure coincidence while in college at Kansas State University. What started out as an offer to help cover karaoke night at Kite's Bar & Grill has turned into so much more. Senior year, DJ Sweet T was contacted by Kansas State University to spin music in the Student Lounge at Bill Snyder Family Stadium during the home football games. This turned into an opportunity to DJ for the Mens Basketball Homecoming pep rally, being on the court during the scrimmage playing music for Bramlage Colliseum! All while maintaining a residency at two bars near campus as well. Shortly after, he graduated & moved to Indiana for 10 months, securing a residency in Indiana until Covid struck and shut down everything, leading to relocating in Kansas City. It's been 2 years in Kansas City & now DJ Sweet T works with local artists putting on shows, doing weddings & working toward getting back into a residency position!

Here's our official interview...

What is your name?

TJ " DJ Sweet T" Henderson

Where are you from? Your age?

Caney, Kansas. 28, 29 in May

What do you do?

I provide sound & vibes at all kinds of gigs, from weddings to karaoke nights. I have a whole mobile setup (audio & lighting) so I do a lot of corporate events, weddings, anything where they need an entertainer who can provide everything. I also work with local artists to provide music support for live shows, bringing the energy while they perform. I've also gone touring with some local KC artists doing gigs in multiple states across the midwest.

Tell us a little about your company/brand -

I've been mixing for over 5 years now, starting at my alma mater Kansas State University! I graduated in 2019 & moved to Kansas City in the middle of Covid, May 2020. I'm still working to grow my network here in Kansas City but I've worked hard to establish myself as a versatile DJ who isn't set to a specific genre who can work with any crowd. From hip hop to country to EDM & everything in between, I have experience in a variety of genres & look to grow my presence in the KC area.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I'd like to see myself in a residency in P&L here in KC. I've held multiple over the years, I just need to get my foot in the door somewhere here.

Who are some of your mentors?

It's hard to narrow it down honestly. I've gotta give a big shoutout to my boy Griff the DJ, he's been one of the biggest people who helped me learn from the jump. I spend a lot of time watching YouTube tutorials by Djs like DJ Angelo, Laidback Luke & Skratch Bastid, though, so I'd say I learn a lot from them, although not technically a mentor.

What are you currently working on?

I've been working on relearning how to play the keyboard, I played growing up and have picked it up again fairly quickly. I'm trying to incorporate that into my live performances. I'm also starting to learn production & sound engineering as well.

During COVID, we all faced struggles, what was one of your main struggles?

The biggest struggle for me during COVID was trying to get into DJing live sets. It made me very aware of how much I need a crowd to give me a sense of direction with my sets if I'm not doing a pre-planned set. I felt like I couldn't decide a good direction to go while I was streaming because I couldn't see my crowd & how they'd respond to each song. My musical interests are so spread out that I end up jumping around a lot when I'm just playing what I want to hear. It was tough because I had just gotten settled in at a new residency while I was in Indiana right when Covid hit, so I had finally gotten my foot in the door and was building my reputation just for it all to get shut down.
